Konkurencia nenechala na seba dlho \u010daka\u0165 a do boja o trh vyslala men\u00e1 ako Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Charger, Plymouth Barracuda\u00a0a pod. \u00a0V roku 1966 vznikla v USA s\u00e9ria automobilov\u00fdch pretekov s n\u00e1zvom Trans-Am Series pod z\u00e1\u0161titou SCAA (Sports Car Club of America), ktor\u00fa hne\u010f ten rok \u00a0a rok 1967 vyhral Ford Mustang s jazdcami ako Jerry Titus, Dick Thompson a \u010fal\u0161\u00edmi.<\/p>\n<p>Za\u010diatkom roka 1968 sa vo Ford Motor \u00a0Company \u00a0st\u00e1va prezidentom Semon E. &#8220;Bunkie&#8221; Knudsen a k dizajn\u00e9rom sa prid\u00e1va Larry Shinoda, ktor\u00fd pracoval predt\u00fdm u GM na Chevrolet Corvette.\u00a0Knudsen pevne veril, \u017ee \u0161portovo laden\u00e9 automobily sa bud\u00fa lep\u0161ie pred\u00e1va\u0165, a preto hne\u010f po svojom \u00a0pr\u00edchode nariadil \u00a0Shinodovi a hlavn\u00e9mu technick\u00e9mu in\u017einierovi Howardovi Freersovi vytvori\u0165 nov\u00fa vysokov\u00fdkonn\u00fa variantu Mustangu. Podmienkou bolo, aby sa nov\u00fd model in\u0161piroval s\u00fa\u0165a\u017en\u00fdmi vozidlami zo \u0161ampion\u00e1tu Trans-Am, ktor\u00e9 vyhrali v rokoch 1966,1967. \u00a0V knihe &#8220;Mustang&#8221; z roku 1979 cituje autor Gary Witzenburg Howarda Freersa,ktor\u00fd rozpr\u00e1va in\u0161trukcie k stavbe automobilu , &#8221; absol\u00fatne najlep\u0161ie ovl\u00e1date\u013en\u00e9 \u00a0auto na americkom trhu&#8221;. Podvozok bol zosilnen\u00fd viacer\u00fdmi \u00fapravami, ktor\u00e9 boli pou\u017eit\u00e9 aj u ostatn\u00fdch variantoch modelu Mustang. Vysokov\u00fdkonn\u00e1 verzia \u00a0v\u00e9\u010dkov\u00e9ho osemvalca \u00a0o objeme 302 kubick\u00fdch palcov (objem 6,04 l a ozna\u010dia to ako small-block :D) bola najlep\u0161ou alternat\u00edvou , ktor\u00e1 by dok\u00e1zala plne vyu\u017ei\u0165 modernizovan\u00fd podvozok.\u00a0Spa\u013eovacia komora v hlave valcov mala nov\u00fd klinov\u00fd tvar a t\u00fdm sa zmenil aj uhol n\u00e1klonenia ventilov, \u010do umo\u017enilo optim\u00e1lnej\u0161ie pr\u00fadenie a horenie zmesi. Pretek\u00e1rska verzia\u00a0Boss 302 mala zv\u00fd\u0161en\u00fd v\u00fdkon na 450 k (331 kW), v\u010faka novej dvojici karbur\u00e1torov.
